My primary goal at Lost City will be to attempt to culture mid to high temperature microorganisms from pieces of the carbonate structures as well as from the underlying peridotite and fluids in contact with both types of surfaces. Because of the very small amount of information we have on this environment a very simple growth media will be used with a variety of possible nutrients that can be added as needed to stimulate growth. Samples will also be taken for DNA and RNA extractions and microbial community analysis, cell counts and other microscopic techniques.
