Active Carbonate Sample 3651-1149 from 2000

This sample was collected from a water depth of 762 m during the Blackman, Kelley, Karson NSF funded 2000 discovery Alvin dive at Lost City.  It was recovered from the active IMAX flange,w hich is a parasitic, 3 story tall stalagmite-like carbonate deposit growing from the north face of Poseidon.  Fluids venting from this site reach 55°C. This sampl was one of the first fresh carbonate samples collected from the Lost City field.  The fresh carbonate is composed of aragonite and brucite, and is highly porous and friable.
