Jeff Karson

Geologist

Jeff Karson's research focuses on the structural and tectonic analysis of rift and transform plate boundaries. He uses systematic collection of geological data to determine the geometry, chronology, and mode of formation of outcrop-scale deformation structures and their relation to crustal processes that operate on a regional scale. Jeff, along with Deb Kelley and Patrick Hickery were the first to dive on Lost City in 2000. Jeff was the Co-Chief Scientist on the 2003 National Science Foundation expedition back to Lost City and he was part of the 2005 team during the Ocean Exploration program. Jeff's main focus of research at Lost City is understanding formation and evolution of the detachment fault system and their importance to generating Lost City-type systems.
