"Studying hydrothermal vents... it's not like collecting postage stamps."

Dave is an expert in the chemistry of hydrothermal vents in the global ocean. He has worked extensively on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, Kermadec Arc, at Lost City and in the Marianas. He uses fluid chemistry to better understand linkages among physical, chemical, and biological processes. He has also developed novel fluid samplers for use on Alvin and robotic vehicles, and an in situ sampler for time-series sampling of vent fluids and particulate DNA from active vent site.
