Extinct Carbonate Sample 3651-0938 from 2000

This sample was collected on the NSF-funded 2000 discovery dive from a depth of 786 m, directly at the base of the Poseidon hydrothermal complex, the 60m tall hydrothermal edifice that is the largest structure in the Lost City field.  The region around the base of Poseidon is littered with extinct carbonate talus spalled off of the main tower.  The sample is mostly composed of calcite and aragonite.
