Extinct Carbonate Sample 3651-0944 from 2000

This sample was recovered at 785 m water depth from the side of Poseidon, the 60 m tall hydrothermal carbonate edifice that defines the central portion of the Lost City Hydrothermal Field.  The sample is a white, feathery  hydrothermal carbonate, and very friable. Typical of young deposits from Lost City, tthis sample is dominantly composed of aragonite, calcite, and brucite. The aragonite is metastable and converts to calcite over time. Brucite is only present in the younger samples.
